Toyota introduced the Cresta in 1980 and was designed to create a higher level of luxury when compared to the MarkII/Cressida. It was a four door hardtop that was rear wheel driven. The Cresta shares the same chassis as the MarkII and was offered with a two tone paint color. It provided more interior options for the convenience of the driver and passengers alike. The Cresta was exported and sold under the name of the Cressida in other countries. The production of the Cresta ended in 2000, having seen five generations of models in that time frame. It was eventually merged with the Chaser and renamed the Verossa which was a sporty luxury car. The Cresta was built along the same lines and design feature as the popular ‘Crown’ brand, and was considered to be just a little step below.
The X70 series was the second generation of the Cresta, and was originally introduced in March 1984. One of the noticeable changes made in the second generation Cresta was the mirrors which were moved from the front fenders, to the familiar western style on the leading edge of the front doors. The mirrors could also be electronically retracted for those tight parking conditions. Toyota offered the Cresta as a Japanese car with a 2.4 L Diesel that was an upgrade from the 2.0 L Diesel in the first generation. In 1985 the Cresta was offered with a twin turbo 1G-GTEU engine. There was also some other upgrades done like fog lights that were mounted flush into the bumpers.
In March 1988, Toyota introduced the third generation of the Cresta, the X80 series. The focus of the new design was a more rounded body style, which was a departure from the usually square look of past Toyota models. The rear suspension was changed to an independent design in 1989. Anti-lock brakes and a traction control system were added in August 1989.
The third generation was the X90, and made its debut in 1992. In October 1993, Toyota added a full time four wheel drive option. September 1994 saw the front grill and the taillights redesigned. A very important safety feature was added in September 1995. They installed front driver side airbags as a standard feature.
In 1996 they introduced the fifth and final generation of the Cresta. This vehicle included a 2000 cc engine as well as a turbo version. In 1998 Toyota made some design changes that included a larger grill and more appealing looking taillights. A four wheel drive was also added as an option in the 2.0 L engine.
The one concern from consumers was that because the vehicle was built so low to the ground, this can present problems in rough road driving conditions.
